Layers of the earth’s crust are revealed by erosional processes. In this series of carved wood sculptures, I recreate these sedimentary rock layers through reclaimed old growth timber. The growth rings of the wood are analogous to the passage of time of the rock.
A series of miniature canyon landscapes that explore the process of erosion. Working in reclaimed wood, I treat the growth rings of the wood as analogous to the layers of sediment found in the earths crust. My process involves hand carving wood to intricate detail, and then documenting the carvings in a way that removes scale from the work. I am heavily influenced by the topography of Pittsburgh and the dissected plateau in which the city sits.
